June 6, 2012 - Christian Parents for Kids Daycare: "Be Kind to Animals Week"

Dr. Kim Everson visited Christian Parents for Kids, a local daycare center, as part of "Be Kind to Animals Week". Approximately 120 children ranging in age from early toddler to preschooler were engaged in a lively rendition of Elizabeth Verdick's book Tails are Not for Pulling. Then Dr. Kim demonstrated a physical examination on a very well-behaved stuffed animal. Finally, she and the teachers helped the children apply bandages to their own stuffed animal "pets".  After years of presenting for elementary school and middle school children, Dr. Kim enjoyed the younger children very much and was surprised how well even the babies participated!

November 5, 2011 - GEMS (Girls Engineering Math Science) at Moraine Park Technical College

Dr. Everson and GEMS participants acted as Disease Detectives, using clues from signalment, history, clinical signs, examination findings and laboratory tests to discover what ailed three pets. In the first case a young pitbull-mix ingested toxic antifreeze. An elderly cat suffered from chronic kidney failure in the second case. In the third case, a middle-aged shih tzu needed treatment for bacterial pneumonia.   The students used their math skills to calculate medication doses and IV fluid rates.

October 25, 2011 - Fond du Lac Soroptomist's Live Your Dream

Dr. Everson shares her experiences as a veterinarian and what it took to become one with eighth grade girls from Fond du Lac as part of the Soroptomist International Live Your Dream Seminar. Discussions ranged from "how much education does it take to become a veterinarian?" (A: anywhere from 6 to 10 years) to "what's the weirdest animal you've ever done surgery on?" (A: a cow because a twisted stomach surgery on one is done in a barn with the animal awake and standing under local anesthetic...they are amazing animals).
